I was a transmigrator, and the plot had jumped straight to the climax.

My wife was telling me she was in love with someone else and wanted a divorce.

In the original story, I was supposed to beg, plead, and make a huge scene, refusing to let her go no matter what. That version of events would have led to a long chain of love-hate drama, ending with me meeting a violent death at the hands of her new lover.

“Alex Thorne, let’s get a divorce. I’m in love with someone else. Even if we force ourselves to stay together, we’ll never be happy. You might get my body, but you’ll never get my heart. And honestly, you won’t even get my body.”

Hearing those familiar lines, I was a little dazed.

I opened my eyes and realized I had somehow transmigrated into a book.

According to the memories flooding my mind, the story had reached the point where the female lead, Saraphina Dubois, wanted a divorce from me. In the original plot, I was supposed to cling to her desperately and refuse at all costs. I was even supposed to say things like, “I’ll only divorce you over my dead body.”

Naturally, that would only make Saraphina hate me even more, to the point where she couldn’t even stand to look at me.

I almost smiled.

As absurd as it all sounded, I could work with it.

I looked down at the divorce papers. If I agreed, Saraphina, the future heir of the powerful Dubois family, would give me three million dollars as compensation.

My current self was just an average guy barely making two thousand a month. According to the book, I wouldn’t earn that much in a lifetime.

Besides, Saraphina and I had never had any real feelings for each other. Our marriage had been nothing but a twist of fate from the very beginning. Now she had found her true love and was even willing to compensate me.

Why would I say no?

Just as Saraphina looked utterly disappointed, even furious, I calmly said, “Sure. Let’s do it.”

Then I decisively signed the divorce papers.

“Should we go file the paperwork now?”

Saraphina froze, unable to believe her ears.

Seeing me actually sign my name seemed to shock her even more.

“You’re agreeing to the divorce?”

“Of course,” I said lightly. “I can’t keep occupying a place I’m not really using, right? Besides, we were husband and wife in name only. No real intimacy. No real relationship. So no harm done to either of us. Speaking of which, when will the compensation hit my account?”

Having thoroughly read the original plot, I knew that in a year or two, I would rejoin my real family—a family the Dubois clan couldn’t even begin to compare to.

Unfortunately, the original Alex hadn’t been so lucky. He had died before he could ever be recognized.

Right now, my main goal was simple: live well, live freely, reclaim my birthright, and enjoy a better life.

Everything else was just background noise.
