Chapter 8
I watched Damon convulse on the floor, shrieking like an animal. Adrian stood over him, the man who had always been elegant and gentle, now looking colder than death.
“If your mouth doesn’t know how to speak,” he said, “then you don’t need it.”
He pulled the scissors free.
Blood splashed across his face.
And I had never seen anyone more beautiful.
Then he plunged the scissors into Damon’s shoulder.
“If you don’t know how to be human,” Adrian said, “then die.”
At that exact moment, guards flooded into the private room and surrounded us.
Yvette, trembling so hard she could barely breathe, suddenly pointed at us and screamed, “Arrest them! These two lunatics injured me and Damon! Whoever cripples them gets a million dollars!”
Seeing the guards arrive, Damon’s expression changed instantly. The panic vanished and his arrogance returned.
“So what if he’s Serena’s lover?” Damon sneered. “So what if he snuck her in? This is Locke territory.”
He glared at me.
“Serena, if you don’t want your lover’s crotch to end up like your dog’s, then come here right now, kneel, knock your head on the floor, and tell him who your real master is.”
Hearing him and Yvette bark like that was honestly funny.
Watching clowns perform could be entertaining too.
So I walked slowly toward Damon.
He actually thought I was going to yield. A strange light appeared in his eyes, one I had never seen before—almost eager, almost greedy.
“Serena,” he said, lifting his chin, “you really do still know your place. Admit it. You still love me. Back then and now, you still love me. Everything you’ve done tonight was just to get my attention, wasn’t it?”
He looked absurdly serious.
“These years, it’s not like you were completely weightless in my heart. If you behave properly with Yvette from now on, I might not be unable to take you back.”
“Damon!” Yvette cried instantly. “You promised there would never be a third person between us! We’re getting married!”
She wept pitifully. “Are you going to let her hurt me again?”
Damon softened and comforted her immediately.
“Don’t worry. As long as I’m here, she won’t dare.”
Then he looked at me with that sick gaze again.
“On our wedding night,” he said, “I’ll make Serena kneel beside the bed and watch. She can help set the mood.”
He still thought he controlled everything.
What he hadn’t noticed was that none of the guards he summoned had obeyed a single one of his orders.
Not one.
