Chapter 7
She took her son to Wyatt’s company and caused an enormous spectacle. She cried in front of everyone, dragged the child around, and told a dramatic story about how Wyatt had seduced an innocent preschool teacher, tricked her into bearing his son, then deceived his wife into a fake divorce.
The women in the office were horrified.
Many of them recorded the scene and posted it online.
Within hours, the story spread all over local social media.
Then people dug up the footage from the police station—of me, in Wyatt’s body, apparently “going insane” and trying to attack people after learning the truth.
Instantly, public opinion swung in my favor.
I became the pitiable wife of the year.
The betrayed woman whose husband had cheated with her daughter’s teacher, fathered a secret son, tricked her into divorce, and driven her to the edge of a breakdown.
Molly became a public disgrace. Her preschool fired her. Other schools in the area blacklisted her too. No one wanted to hire her.
And of course, my boss didn’t spare Wyatt either.
He pointed at me—in Wyatt’s body—and cursed me out in language so vicious it almost made me feel refreshed. Then he instructed HR to terminate Wyatt on the spot.
I packed up happily and left.
For the next few days, I spent as much time with Lily as I could.
For the first three, I took her everywhere she wanted to go.
On the fourth day, I began organizing paperwork.
On the fifth, I sent a package to my boss by express delivery, along with a handwritten letter.
On the sixth, I left Lily with my parents for two days.
And on the seventh day, Wyatt was released.
He came home looking disheveled, bitter, and full of hatred.
He sneered at me.
“Laura, do you think just because you stole my body I can’t do anything? That house is your premarital property, sure, but as long as I’m in your body, it’s mine to use. I can move Kieran in here. I can live in the house your parents paid for. I can ask your parents for money whenever I want. They think I’m you, after all. I could drain their retirement dry and all you could do is watch.”
I nodded through the whole speech.
When he finished, I said mildly, “Oh, by the way. You were fired. And now you’re internet-famous as human trash.”
I showed him the videos of Molly’s meltdown at the company.
He stared at them in shock.
Then, after a moment, he started laughing.
“But you’re Wyatt now,” he said. “Everyone cursing Wyatt is cursing you.”
I checked the clock.
Ten minutes until the storm.
Outside, thunder rolled. Lightning split the sky.
Wyatt pointed at me triumphantly. “Even heaven is helping me, Laura. You can’t beat me.”
I just smiled and kept watching the clock.
One minute.
Two.
Three.
Then ten.
The sky finally broke.
Rain slammed against the windows in a furious sheet.
And suddenly, dizziness hit me so hard I shut my eyes.
When I opened them again, the familiar weight of my own body had returned.
I was Laura again.
And Wyatt was Wyatt.
The second he realized it, he looked at me with savage fury.
I smiled kindly.
“Now the cheating scumbag is you. The fired loser is you. And all your assets—and your mother’s—have already been transferred to Lily. Every bit of private money you had has been converted into investments for her. You are now a broke, unemployed, middle-aged man everyone despises.”
Then I pointed around us.
“And this premarital house? It’s still mine. You can’t take a single thing.”
He froze.
Then his eyes went blood-red and he lunged at me.
But I had expected that.
I dodged.
He charged again.
At that exact moment, there was a knock at the door.
I ran over and opened it.
The police were standing outside.
Behind them, in the pouring rain, was my boss.
I let out a long breath.
Perfect timing.
The letter I had mailed to my boss had been written in the voice of my parents, begging him to call the police and have them come to my house exactly seven days later because I was terrified Wyatt would be released and come home to hurt me.
Knowing my boss, I had been certain he would take it seriously. He would calculate the timing carefully and arrive with the police right on time.
He did not disappoint me by even one minute.
The officers entered and took Wyatt away.
For several seconds, he was too stunned to resist.
Then he started thrashing wildly.
“Did you seduce the boss a long time ago? Were you both plotting against me from the start? Just wait! When I get out, I’ll kill you!”
Then, as they dragged him toward the car, he suddenly switched tactics and began begging.
“We have a child together! Laura, I’m your husband! I was wrong! I won’t cheat again! Please, spare me!”
I smiled softly.
“If I spare you, the houses and money won’t all belong to my daughter. If I don’t spare you, I live. Tell me, Wyatt, which do you think I’ll choose?”
He went still.
Then he started shrieking that I was the most vicious woman in the world.
I took it as a compliment.
My boss patted my shoulder.
“Don’t be upset. Come back to work on Monday. I’ll have your office ready. Right next to mine.”
I nodded.
“Okay.”
