chapter 4
I steadied myself, took a breath, and turned to my parents.
“If Ethan doesn’t want this engagement, then let’s drop it. Our family doesn’t force people into things they don’t want, and it’s not like he’s my only option.”
Then I looked at his parents, keeping my voice warm and sincere.
“I truly hope Ethan finds happiness with the person he loves. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, if there’s nothing else to discuss, we’ll head out.”
We had barely stepped out of the private dining room when I spotted Rose standing just down the hallway. The girl was like glue—she couldn’t even wait five minutes.
I ignored her and ushered my parents toward the exit. Predictably, Rose followed, her heels clicking behind me until she was close enough to hiss in my ear.
“Nora, Ethan belongs to me. I’d suggest you know your place.”
Before I could even respond, her entire demeanor shifted. Her voice turned soft and trembling, loud enough for anyone nearby to hear.
“Oh, Nora, I’m so sorry—I didn’t mean to bump into you! Please don’t be mad. I just… I just want you to give Ethan back to me.”
I didn’t get a chance to say a word before Ethan appeared behind us, already furious. He didn’t ask what happened, didn’t even pause to assess the situation—he just jumped straight to his conclusion.
“Nora, what the hell are you doing? Rose has nothing to do with you. Is it really necessary to go after a girl like her? If you have a problem, take it up with me.”
