Chapter 5
As soon as we got back to our room, a girl from next door came over with an excited, secretive look.
“Did you hear?” she whispered. “There’s been a development in the murder case upstairs.”
We all turned to her at once.
“The police checked the hallway cameras. They didn’t see anyone entering or leaving the victim’s room. So now the victim’s three roommates are the prime suspects. They’ve all been taken in for questioning.”
We stared at her.
If nobody had entered or left, then the killer was probably one of the roommates.
That meant this probably had nothing to do with Madison.
Jessica bit her lip. “Should we apologize to Maddie? I mean, if I were suspected of murder like that, I’d be upset too.”
“Apologize for what?” Reilly said bluntly. “We never actually said she did it. We just asked about her dreams. She’s being oversensitive. Apologizing now would only make things more awkward.”
Reilly had a point.
So we dropped the subject, washed up, and went to bed.
I had been asleep for who knew how long when sudden knocking woke me.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
I grabbed my phone from the nightstand. The screen glowed in the darkness, and cold sweat instantly covered my skin.
Who would knock on our door in the middle of the night?
Jessica clicked on her bunk light. I could see that Reilly was awake too.
Jessica’s trembling voice came from above. “Who is it?”
A familiar voice answered from outside.
“It’s me. Madison.”
Under the dim light, I saw Reilly’s face go white.
I knew all of us were thinking the same thing.
Was Madison outside our door awake… or sleepwalking?
I pulled my blanket tighter around myself and blurted out, “What do you want?”
There was a pause.
Then soft laughter came through the door.
“I just cut open a perfectly ripe watermelon. Want some?”
The room went completely silent.
