chapter 2
By the time I reached the elevator, my phone was already blowing up.
The caller ID: Mr. Carter. The CEO.
I answered.
Before I could speak, his voice came crashing through the line.
“Lynn, get back to the office right now. Who gave you the nerve to slam the table and walk out on your manager?”
I leaned against the cold elevator wall.
“Mr. Carter, I think you’ve misunderstood something.”
“Misunderstood? Shawn already told me everything. You caused a scene, disrupted discipline, and even encouraged others to quit.”
I almost laughed.
So that’s how it was.
“Mr. Carter, I was just hungry from overtime and ate a pack of snacks. Manager Shawn said he’d deduct my two hundred thousand commission.”
Silence.
Two hundred thousand wasn’t a small number.
It meant I had closed a multi-million-dollar deal.
A businessman like him knew exactly what that meant.
After a few seconds, his tone softened.
“Young people have tempers, I understand. Shawn can be blunt, but it’s for the company. Come back, we’ll talk it out.”
“For the company? So that justifies withholding earned income?”
He choked on his words.
“Fine. Come back. I guarantee your commission stays intact. I’ll even have Shawn apologize.”
Apologize?
It sounded sincere.
But I knew better.
Today he could force Shawn to apologize.
Tomorrow, he could quietly make my life miserable to protect him.
After all—
Shawn was his wife’s nephew.
And I?
Just a tool that made money.
“No need. I’ll send my resignation report to your email.”
I hung up.
The elevator doors opened.
My reflection stared back at me—
Calm.
Completely calm.
