chapter 13

My heart did that old, stupid stutter—hope, then exposure, then the pinch of something breaking. I put the paper back in the envelope like a fragile relic and slid it into the box labeled “Memories.” I taped the box shut with a gentleness that felt more final than anything else I’d done.

The first time I went back to his apartment after signing the lease for my little studio downtown, I went because I needed to. Not to apologize, not to listen to explanations—or to be explained to—but to close the door in the clearest way possible. I had left a key in the “Memories” box the week before, a ridiculous last-holdout of sentiment. Now I wanted the physical act of taking the key away.

I pushed open the door and the apartment smelled like the last person who had lived there: paper, coffee grounds, the faint incense of a candle he never lit. I moved through the rooms like someone sweeping dust into their palms. In the closet, behind a stack of old business card holders, I found a battered cardboard shoebox labeled, in his tidy cursive, Memories.

I sat on the floor and opened it, because I could not help it. The items were small: a dried ticket stub, a pressed jasmine, a napkin with an inside joke scribbled on it. And at the bottom, a folded letter in an envelope addressed not to me but to him—Kobe—and postmarked the week before. My fingers hovered over the flap; curiosity is a greedy thing. I slit the envelope open.

It was not a letter for him to read privately. It was a legal-looking sheet with a hospital logo at the top and an itemized list. The list ran like a ledger: consultations, medication, a code that read like an oncology marker. At the bottom, a note in a cramped, anxious hand: We have no one else. Thank you for everything, Mr. Nakamura. Please, for Lola and Mikey—if you can, do not leave them.

I felt my mouth go dry. I read it twice, then a third time, as if repetition could shift the meaning. It sat like a hinge inside my chest. The ledger numbers were raw and small, but their weight was enormous. There was also a name and an address I didn’t recognize. Underneath, in the same cramped hand, a sentence that read like a push and a confession: When our home was flooded, you were the one who let us sleep in your office that week. Lola’s mother never forgave herself. She hopes you will understand.
