chapter 3
I was known for being nice. The class president. The girl who broke up fights and helped teachers and organized charity drives. I didn’t “use” Roman like a weapon just because someone annoyed me.
But Roman stepped closer to me anyway, shoulders tight, radiating a silent, unmistakable warning: Don’t touch her.
The hallway temperature seemed to drop. People backed away without being told to.
I reached for Roman’s hand and squeezed once.
“Let’s go,” I said softly. “She clearly doesn’t need help.”
Instantly, the tension snapped—like the only thing Roman’s world had been waiting for was our joined hands. He stared at our fingers like they were proof that reality was still in place.
At this school, lunch was a quick break—most students went back to their dorms to nap. I had to return to the classroom to grab a textbook I’d forgotten. On my way, I passed the courtyard behind the cafeteria and heard voices.
Then I heard my name.
“Sienna is such a—she’s always in the way,” someone muttered.
“You need to figure out a way to get rid of her.”
I stopped.
Sadie was sitting on a bench, eating from a lunchbox. She was completely alone.
Then I heard another voice—flat, mechanical, too calm to be human. It sounded like it came from nowhere and everywhere at once.
“Earn more conquest points,” it said.
I went very still.
Sadie stabbed at her food, frowning. “You said ‘ice queen’ was his type. Why isn’t he falling for me?”
“He is,” the voice replied. “Conquest value increased by one point today.”
Sadie’s eyes gleamed. “So Roman is conquerable.”
My stomach turned.
“What’s next?” she asked. “This innocent-girl act isn’t working.”
“Then change tactics,” the voice said. “Men like novelty. Sienna is cold and aloof. She likely shows little affection. You be warm. Be passionate.”
Sadie huffed. “Fine. I’ll try.”
I backed away before the courtyard air could notice I’d been holding my breath.
